October 2006 saw the start of a relighting programme for the Plymouth Hoe seafront. The existing installation consisted of GEC ZD10807 post top lanterns on 5 & 6m hexagonal steel columns. The lamps were 150w SON-T.
The new scheme designed for the road used the latest optics in the new 100w SON-T Urbis Hestia 2 lantern. Because of the complete contrast in lighting equipment, and also modern lighting standards, most columns were placed in new locations. This meant that rather than replacing columns like-for-like, most had to be trenched in. Because of this, there was a changeover period where old and new columns were in place together; providing a unique comparison opportunity.
